2022: new year, new projects for the nature centre at Courmettes
2022 promises to be rich in projects! And this is thanks to the volunteers and partners who are joining us for the year and allowing us to multiply our efforts.
Of course, we are continuing with and improving what is already in place, but several new projects are on the way and perhaps others will be added!
New projects for 2022:
- The implementation of a monitoring protocol for orchid sites to ensure their maintenance and the good ecological state of the site
- Mapping of breeding birds at Courmettes
- The renewal of the site’s signage (depending on funding)
- The creation of an educational pond, in connection with the educational garden that Claire is developing. We are in partnership with the BTS GPN (management school) of Nice. In January, they came to dig a hole to test the how water-tight the soil is in view of the future pond, and also to make a pathway around the centuries-old oaks to preserve them. They are working on the pond project in class and will come to the site in the autumn of 2022.
There are plenty of other ideas and taxa to study, and always a lot of people to welcome, so if you would like to get involved so that we can continue to reconcile welcoming the public and preserving biodiversity, we would be delighted to welcome you!
Also new is a small team training project: “one month, one taxon”. The principle is simple: each month, we choose a fauna or flora group and each week, before the team meeting, we give a short presentation of a species present at Les Courmettes from this group. Last week, we discovered the spiny toad, and next week it will be the turn of the agile frog…! A whole programme… that the participants of our residentials will be able to share with us during their week on site.
